As the NFL has just completed their final cuts, and practice squads are about locked up over 500 players have recently become available and unemployed as the 2025 NFL season kicks off this coming Thursday. With the volatility of the UFL below are ten Offensive players recently recent released that the UFL could look at.
Tommy Mellott Wide Receiver
The Tommy Mellott experience didn’t last long in Las Vegas with his transition to wide receiver unsuccessful. With the UFL, Mellott can put together quality reps against quality competition. Mellott ran a 4.39 and is lacking the reps to give himself a shot at the NFL.
Best Fit: San Antonio Brahmas
Ryan Flournoy Wide Receiver
Flournoy showed promise after the Cowboys suffered injuries at position and registered 10 receptions for 102 yards. Flournoy has decent size and plays a similar game to the Battlehawks Frank Darby. After his release from Dallas, it may be wise to give Flournoy a UFL option if he wants to extend his NFL career.
Best Fit: St. Louis Battlehawks or Birmingham Stallions
Update: Flournoy was resigned to the Cowboys practice squad Saturday Evening.
Jase McClellan Running Back
McClellan was released by the Falcons in order to make room for Jashaun Corbin earlier in the year, and after failing to make the Buccaneers roster, he is now a free agent. McClellan may not be as fast as Corbin, but he is a physical downhill one cut runner. McClellan could provide value to a team like the Defenders who may be in need of a replacement for Abram Smith.
Best fit: D.C. Defenders

Luke Grimm
Grimm showed grit and versatility with the Chargers after a great career at the university of Kansas. The ability to play in the slot and outside Grimm could provide value to a team looking to overhaul their receiving corps. Look for a team like the Memphis Showboats to considering give Grimm a look if they hope to rekindle some of the success they had with Vinny Papale.
Best fit: Memphis Showboats
Taylor Heinicke Quarterback
Heinicke is a bit of a reach here, but for the sake of argument why not. The XFL 2020 claims Heinicke from his time in with the Battlehawks and a reunion with a QB who lost out to Trey Lance back in St. Louis Blue. Heinicke will most likely be back on an NFL roster once the NFL season begins, but in the meantime Heinicke returning to spring football may be something to keep tabs on come the spring.
Gareth Warren Offensive Linemen
Warren was a riser after the East West Shrine Bowl landing a contract with the Steelers. He was waived after a head injury and is currently a free agent. With Warren there is a ton of upside potential and with the Battlehawks needing some youth on the Offensive Line, maybe Warren provides that and some local value (University of Lindenwood alum in St. Louis area) for the UFL’s favorite franchise.
Best fit: St. Louis Battlehawks
I was a bit surprise Prieskorn didn’t sign with the Broncos practice squad but currently he is on the workout cycle recently training with the New York Giants. Prieskorn has plenty of marketable ties with his experience at the University of Memphis and being a Michigan native. Prieskorn may be a bit slower than ideal, but his 6-6 frame easily provides value to multiple UFL teams.
Best fit: Houston Roughnecks, Memphis Showboats, or Michigan Panthers
Evan Hull
Hull has bounced between practice squads and the active roster, however, hasn’t really had a true opportunity to showcase his skillset in the regular season. Hull is still young enough to garner NFL interest and at 24 could provide value to a team with aging backs. Hull could help the Birmingham Stallions get a bit younger as C.J. Marable and Ricky Person look to go into year 4 or 5 in 2026.
Best fit: Birmingham Stallions
Phillip Dorsett
The UFL has seen plenty of former first round picks at wide receiver join the league and Dorsett at age-32 is at that point. While he may be a bit long in the tooth, Dorsett does have a chance to “be the guy” on a UFL team for one final “hurrah”. The league has seen Martavis Bryant, Corey Coleman, and Josh Gordon all make waves so why not Dorsett?
Best fit: D.C. Defenders
Silas Bolden
Bolden’s brother Victor Bolden was an extremely successful spring football receiver (Victor Bolden Jr.), which could lead to him taking a stab at spring football. Bolden was third fiddle during his senior year at Texas however there is a lot of ability that needs a bit extra seasoning. Look for the Renegades or Stallions to give Bolden a chance for some new blood in their Receiver room.
Best fit: Arlington Renegades or Birmingham Stallions
