One of spring football’s more exciting players has decided to retire prior to the 2026 UFL season. Stallions Quarterback Alex McGough has retired, after 8 seasons of professional football between the NFL, USFL, and UFL.
McGough came out of FIU in 2018 as a 7th round draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks. He’d spend time with Seattle, the Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars before being drafted in the first round of the 2022 USFL draft to the Stallions. McGough was originally the starter in Birmingham in 2022, until an injury forced him out of the lineup, however, would make three starts in the 2022 season, including playing the 2nd half of the 2022 championship against the Philadelphia Stars.

McGough would replace Smith in the 2023 opener, eventually leading the Stallions to another USFL championship. He’d earn MVP honors, an All-USFL selection, multiple player of the week honors, and a contract with the Green Bay Packers. McGough would spend parts of two seasons with the Packers even spending time on the roster as a wide receiver. He returned to Birmingham in 2025, however a shoulder injury ended his season early.
McGough retires from spring football going 13-3 (playoffs included), 3,284 passing yards, 33 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 788 rushing and 9 rushing touchdowns in his career.
Other UFL Notes:
Former D.C. Defenders Offensive Lineman Gunner Britton has also retired. He spent one season with D.C. earning a UFL championship and an NFL opportunity with the Detroit Lions.
The UFL also began announcing transactions once more. They can be found on the UFL’s Communications Page via X.
The UFL is scheduled to announce the 2026 season schedule tomorrow January 22nd.

The CFL champion Saskatchewan Roughriders hold McGough’s negotiation rights. It’ll be interesting to see if they bring him into the fold provided they can work with his nagging shoulder. They still need a succession plan at quarterback.

Good find King. I was unaware Saskatchewan held his rights.
