The UFL waiver wire has been extremely active as teams continue to retool their rosters for the 2026 UFL season, and the first in the Repole era. While the UFL season is set to begin training camp at the end of February, several players have opted to begin the next phases of their career, rather than take part in the 2026 UFL season.

Steven Gonzalez Birmingham Stallions

Gonzalez was slated to be “the guy” in Birmingham reuniting with his Quarterback now Head Coach A.J. McCarron. Gonzalez who spent the fall of 2025 a part of Penn State’s recruiting team opted to play in the UFL due to his employment in question under New Penn State Head Coach Matt Campbell taking over for James Franklin. After UFL draft Gonzalez was offered to remain on staff. Gonzalez played three seasons with the Battlehawks earning all-league honors in 2023, and 2025.

Jamir Jones Louisville Kings

After two UFL seasons with the Brahmas and the Roughnecks, Jones has opted for his retirement after being selected by the Louisville Kings in the 2026 UFL Draft. Jones came into football in 2020 as a UDFA out of Notre Dame. He appeared in 32 NFL regular season games, along with 12 games through the 24-25 UFL season.

Jake Sutherland St. Louis Battlehawks

After five seasons in pro football, the fan favorite for the Battlehawks has opted to retire. Sutherland began his pro football career coming out of FCS Moorhead State, the massive Tight End played with the Atlanta Legends (AAF), New York Guardians (XFL 2.0), before rejoining the Battlehawks in 2023 for three season. Sutherland totaled 31 receptions for 269 yards and 4 touchdowns in his spring football career (36 games), while also being a weapon on two point conversions for the Battlehawks.

So far 37 players have officially announced their retirement dating back to the beginning of the 2025 season. With UFL training camp scheduled to begin on February 23rd, the UFL could see more “established players” call it quits as the team goes into their 3rd season of their existence.

Sorry to see Jake Sutherland retire. It’s always been entertaining to watch him with the B’hawks. The Dome won’t be the same without him.

I agree, Gary. The Battlehawks and the league will miss him. A true football player.
